In review

I was just looking at a few of my old posts about the Blazers, and I found a few things interesting. One interesting thing was that I was really focused on adding Oden to this team early in the season. I actually posted a starting lineup in picture form at one point. Looking back at that, all the picture links are still good but one: Zach Randolph. Maybe I should replace that picture with Lamarcus. I should also replace the picture of Martell with somebody else. I'm not sure who, but probably not him. Travis Outlaw, maybe? Rashard Lewis, maybe? After the lottery, all the sudden the idea of picking up Lewis seems much better to me. Much better.

The Blazers would be REALLY good with Rashard Lewis. Good time to be a Portland fan. By the way, could you comment on your thoughts that so many in the media have made about how it is bad for the NBA that the next 2 stars are going to be in the Pacific Northwest? It makes sense to me (since I will have to stay up really late to watch them), but I also suffer from the East Coast bias...

I can see the argument that it benefits a pro sports league, especially one that has popularity issues like the NBA now, benefits from having more of its top players and teams in the Midwest and East Coast. Pro sports matter more there than they do elsewhere in the country, possibly because they're our primary source of regional pride, people stay put more out here, and we need something to distract us from the crappy living conditions.

That said, I can't see it in this case. The Blazers have great fans, and are pretty much it in Oregon for pro sports, and should now have the basis for a very entertaining team (although whether they can compete with Dallas/Phoenix/San Antonio soon remains to be seen). And the #2 pick could potentially save the Sonics (Seattle is a great sports town, it's just been hard to tell in the NBA lately because the Sonics have been bad for a few years and management doesn't seem to care).

Plus, I'd hesitate to lock them down as the "next 2 stars" before they play a game in the NBA. In fact, I kind of have a feeling that, while both will be good pros, at least one will be a bust in the sense that other players from this draft class will overshadown them. That said, it would help the NBA a ton to get another draft class like '03.
